I've put the Quake I CD more in my cd player for the music then I putted it in my pc for the game :-) Also the WipeOut series had great music! They really influenced me to dig deeper in the electronic music genre when I was younger :)
Definitly, hands down, the best game music ever is from the final fantasy series. Composer = Nobuo Uematsu No shit really, check it out, i haven't got any links but i've got tons of ths stuff on my pc. here are some suggestions:
Final Fantasy 7: - Aeris death scene (orchestrated) Final Fantasy 10: - To Zanarkand - Someday the dream will end - Isn't it beautifull Final Fantasy 9: - Beatrix theme Also the best of all: soundtrack from the final fantasy movie: Advent Children Everything in the final fantasy series before FF8 is 8/32 bit music and polytone. mainly classical but it's actually designed to make you feel a certain emotion for every song, this is offcourse because it's normally linked t a certain scene in the game with a certai feeling. I can recommend this music to everybody
this HAS to be my favourite right now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TBTI8hqh6cI these guys could not come up with a better song for BF Bad Company!
all of Nobuo Uematsu's work. And world of Goo's music is kickass too
haha world of goo rocks! one of the nicest games of the year, and with very nice music too i also liked the soundtrack of splinter cell by amon tobin, chaos theory

the original are russian songs....hmmmm, will do some research cuz there are multiple tetris tunes in the game, all russian-style I thought...
It's more about the nostalgia then the quality:
Game Boy: Volleyfire It was a space shooter game. Space electro disco stuff these are midi's: http://www.electrobel.be/ http://www.electrobel.be/ http://www.electrobel.be/ http://www.electrobel.be/ http://www.electrobel.be/ and last but not least: the boss battle theme: http://www.electrobel.be/

edit: ok i pretty much fucked up all the links... great might redo it but i'm off now.
The best in my opinion is the soundtrack to a little known game called "Journey To Silius" For the nes system. Cool thing about it is the way it takes the full advantage of the nes soundchip. I made a zip for you guys with 320kbit versions of the tracks :) http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/19392/Journey%20to%20Silius%20%28MP3%29.zip
Also some of my all time favourites include. Hero quest, super cars 2, lotus esprit series for the amiga. Super fantasy zone for the mega drive. Supermario3,zelda for Nes.

Holy shit forgot all about tyrian. remember playing it in dos when i was little.
The fearfactory soundtrack for carmageddon was so awesome, i remember i bought the game the day it came out... many times i just listened to the tracks on my stereo. That game is probably the best car game (if you can call it that) ever created. Too bad it only went downhill for SCI from thereon :(
carmageddon rocked :p
i remember an old dos game called QUARANTINE that was insanely good back then :p
Jazz jackrabbit had some good music , so did the duke nukem series. WIPEOUT (on ps1) was insanaly good (even though i knew every song from it).
aah, nostalgia of old video games :p
Actualy, the Ink Spot's hit "I don't want to set the world on fire" from Fallout 3

Honestly what I always loved was the Donkey Kong Country soundtracks, especially from Diddey Kong's Adventures. I remember putting on my SNES in one specific level just because I loved listening to it. Age of Empires 1 had some pretty cool soundtracks too imo. These days, video games don't have those really amazing soundtracks anymore, maybe apart from a few games. But I find it kinda sad that I'd turn on my SNES more than any other console I have if my goal would be to look for some good vibes.
AH :) Wipeout 2097 on psx :fsol, prodigy, photek ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZsS5_Bn98Y&feature=related gargoyle's quest, those were the days the final fantasy series is also really great, i remember just putting the installdisk in my pc and letting the music of the installer loop for half an hour.

Zelda tunes! every episode is excellent, as for the game as for the music... Maybe "Minish cap" wes the sequel with the best soundtrack, but its hard to say!
Anything from Chrono trigger.
