ok so i'm finally getting somewhere with regards to making some money from making music! - yeha!

but here's my problem: this guy has produced a video for "the northern bank" here in n.ireland & he's used the madonna track "hung up" for the background music. they want to use the video for customers & training purposes, but because of the madonna track, it would cost too much. my job is to create a song with the same feel/grooves/style of the madonna track, that will fit with the video, but sufficiently different so as to avoid copyright infringements. i have confidence i can do this BUT!...

how much should i charge for this? has anyone any experience in this area? how do i calculate a price? i don't want overcharge them or undercharge myself! please help!!!

I once got 200 Euros for the background music to a promotional exhibition video for firefighter equipment... but the guy from the agency that paid me said , that this amount was a strict minimun as it was a minimal budget project.

He didn't say it... but I understood that normally I should get paid twice or three times as much.

Another thing I notice... my song was already finished when they chose it.

Yours got ordered with strict guidelines... which in my opinion makes it more expensive!

Is it a one off job, will there be more work for yourself?

Is it only for NI?

You can go two ways, one through the MCPS, but you need a certain ammount of tracks that have been or are going to be broadcasted before joining them... If it is only for the North of Island I wouldnt bother with the MCPS, you probably wouldnt make that much from internal corporate music.

Therefore I'd offer a buyout, start £1000, and see what they say, if they say thats out of the budget then drop it by a hundred... but if it is a buy out, Be sure to make a contract up stating where and what it will be used for, You'd kick yourself if you heard it on national TV or the radio even...

Good luck Dude.

ask your national copyrights association how much it would cost to use the madonna sample and take half or 1/3 of it... if eg. using the madonna song would be 2000€, say you'll do it for a 1000€ and say you saved them 1000€...easy as hell

just a matter of making them believe you saved their money (instead of having to pay you)

hi guys!

sorry i've been away so long, but my pc died & i've been busy lately so i've been nowhere near the internet! but i'm back thankfully!!

anyway, thanks for your advice. i did the song, it took me about 2 & a half hours & i only charged them £150, but told them that was just for use in that video. if they wanted to use it for anything else, they could buy it. but they didn't want to at the moment. on the plus side, the company that made the video were so impressed with the tune that they have requested a cd of my work, for possible use in future videos. so more work may come out of all this.

thank you all for your advice. no doubt i'll be asking for more soon.

cheers,

aidor.

Hope you put all those agreements on paper before handing them a cd?
