Pakicetus is a genus of extinct terrestrial carnivorous mammal of the family Pakicetidae which was endemic to Asia from the Eocene (55.8 ± 0.2—40 ± 0.1 Ma). Pakicetus existed for approximately 15.8 million years.[1] Many paleontologists regard it as a close relative to the direct ancestors of modern day whales. It was first restorated as a semiaquatic mammal similar to a crocodile or the related Ambulocetus (at the time based on some skull fragments), but is now known to have been a terrestrial, wolflike mammal.
